Extension of operating hours for London Biggin Hill Airport

Bromley council have agreed to an extension of operating hours with stringent conditions and obligations for the Biggin Hill Airport to fulfil.

The agreement followed an earlier meeting of the full council on Wednesday.  The airport will still not be able to operate the proposed operating hours, which were reduced following the March Executive meeting, until a series of conditions are complied with.

Councillor Stephen Carr, Leader of Bromley Council said, “There has been much debate and many opinions shared about this whole proposal, which we have listened to and I recognise that this has polarised opinion.  The new operating hours, with the stringent conditions that are being imposed, will deliver noise reduction benefits for residents.

There will be a Noise Action Plan every five years to keep focussed on the noise levels that residents, particularly under the flight path, face daily.

The news follows an application by the council’s tenant, the airport, last year, to extend the operating hours and introduce a Noise Action Plan along with plans to improve the local economy.

If all the conditions are met, the new operating hours will be 6.30am to 11pm, Monday to Friday and 8am to 10pm at the weekend and on Bank Holidays.

The airport’s package of proposals also included proposals for job creation and investment in the local economy, with more companies based at Biggin Hill.
