This September will see the introduction of The Children and Families Act, a new Act of Parliament which signifies important changes for children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs. And Bromley Mencap, in partnership with Burgess Autistic Trust, Bromley Parent Voice and Bromley Experts by Experience are delighted to be at the centre of the new Act, as the government has commissioned them to undertake research with young people and familieswho are affected by it.

For the first two years of the implementation of the Act, the government are funding an Independent Supporters programme, which aims to help support parents and young people in managing the incoming changes. Further means of continuous support for families will be investigated and implemented at the end of the project.

The findings of the research will help inform government on the appropriate model of Independent Support which will be provided from September.

Work has already begun into this vital research. Bromley Mencap have conducted focus groups, questionnaires, activity days and one-to-one interviews - all in order to consult with families and disabled young people for the research.

On completion, the research report will be submitted to the National Children’s Bureau.

Bromley Mencap is very pleased to be leading on this national piece of research with local partners.
