Another trip north to Bolton, somewhat complicated by the fuel shortage due to there not being a tanker drivers strike before Easter.

I have stayed at this hotel previously, so booked one of their premium rooms that includes Internet, movies and mineral water in the standard room charge. This also automatically allocates one of the larger rooms or suites.

On arrival I was allocated room 784, the Belmont Suite on the second floor of the rear block. Whilst this faces south west, back towards the entrance and the A6/Manchester Road, it is set some way back and road noise was not an issue.

After unpacking I attempted to gain a connection to the Internet, but was unable to do so. This does involve agreeing to the £19.95 per day charge, either via the TV or via your own PC when you first connect, but this charge never appears on the final bill. I kept getting an error message, so after calling reception they sent someone up to have a look. They suggested that the TV had been moved between rooms, so it would not work. They helped me to move down the corridor to Room 770, the Rivenhall Suite where I had stayed previously. This room faced in the same direction as the previous one, but had the added "advantage" of scaffolding outside the windows, though during my stay I did not see anyone using this?

The remainder of my stay was excellent. I tried the Arts restaurant one evening, and the food was good - much better than eating alone in my room and the serving staff were pleasant and friendly.

The leisure facilities are good at this hotel, and even though there were children’s swimming lessons during the early evenings, they were well behaved and kept to a roped off area of the pool, allowing other guests plenty of room to swim lengths or just "float and soak".

The staff as always were friendly and welcoming, and if I'm back in the area I'll be sure to stay here again.

I stayed numerous times at this hotel when it was a Ramada as it was a convieniant location for work. There were many times when there were problems, (being given a radiator key to bleed the radiator in my room throughout the night when the heating system was on the blink, forgetting my dinner order and leaving me waiting for an hour, are just two). So its good to say that since Mercure took it on improvements have come on a pace but the most noticeable improvement is with the staff. Previously the only staff to be consistently good were the breakfast girls. Now everyone speaks, the reception is great and getting a beer at the bar no longer takes an age. (would be great if they had a local bitter on draught though). Staying there is something to look forward to.

I have stayed here about 5 times now the last this weekend and have to say I would return tomorrow. Rooms airy, comfortable and bathrooms spotless. Showers hot and pressure great.
Only other hotels in area are Travel Lodge(avoid like the plague) Premier Inn sound but this was much better for the same price.

I didnt eat there though so cant comment.

I used the hotel as a place to crash after attending a wedding nearby and it served it's purpose well. The hotel was easy to find, being just off the A6 and M61 and had ample free parking. The hotel itself was basic but clean and the welcome from the reception staff warm and inviting. The room I had was fine, a little dated but adequate for what I needed. Bathroom etc was clean and the shower powerful enough, although there was no heating in the bathroom, which made it a little chilly first thing in the morning, as the room I had was on the top corner of the building and therefore exposed to the Bolton winds! But that wasn't much of a problem and I had a good night's sleep so can't complain.

Breakfast was included in the £40 I paid, which made this excellent vbalue for money as the breakfast was hearty - good selection of cooked and non-cooked items served by friendly staff.

So overall a pleasant stay - the only thing that would have made it better would have been wi-fi access in the rooms.

On May 4th 2012 I attended a wedding at this hotel. The room was decorated beautifully - lots of fairy lights, pretty lanterns and it really did look romantic. The meal after the service was first class. The food was well cooked and seasoned and very nicely presented. All the staff were helpful and very smartly dressed. The day was a wonderful one so much so that I cant think of anywhere nicer to book for my husbands 70th birthday next year. I dont think anyone getting married there would be disappointed.

I was booked into the Mercure Bolton West by my company when I was travelling to Bolton for business. I had quite a day, with a 5am start, flying to East Midlands, meetings all day and then a 2 hour journey to Bolton. On days like that I always dread staying somewhere new as you don't know what the service, food and room will be like. I had no need to worry with this hotel, we arrived around 7.30pm and the receptionist kindly stored out bags so that we could eat in the restaurant. The food was as you would expect in a chain hotel but the experience was elevated by Emma Yates, our waitress who was extremely personable and went above and beyond to ensure we were happy (thanks for the biscuits Emma!). We were then checked in by the equally friendly Angela Wilson who was very efficient and got us two lovely rooms.

People like Emma and Angela really help bring back a bit of local personality and charm to chain hotels like Mercure and shouldn't be underestimated. I'd be unlikely to remember this type of hotel for the foods or furnishings but I will certainly remember the faces and friendliness of the staff and look forward to my next visit.

Great value package - two nights B&B and one night dinner - all for just over £100. Room on top floor - small but cosy. There are even views of the Lancashire hills and the Reebok stadium in the distance. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Food surprisingly good - hot buffet breakfast in particular was fresh and appetising. Large pool was very warm with clean changing facilities. Very quiet despite two wedding receptions taking place.
