The Nature of Gothic: Reflecting the Natural World in Historic and Contemporary Artistic Practice.

Discover The Nature of Gothic at Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, an exhibition that celebrates how artists past and present have reflected the beauty of the natural world. Inspired by John Ruskin’s phrase “the nature of gothic”, it brings together historic craftsmanship and modern creativity.

Running from 13th September to 13th December 2025, the exhibition features highlights from Blackburn’s Hart Collection of medieval and Islamic manuscripts, alongside works from the Arts and Crafts Movement, including ceramics, textiles, and Private Press books. Pieces by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and contemporary artists reveal how nature continues to inspire artistic expression.

This exhibition forms part of the Museum’s National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) programme, supported by Arts Council England and the Brian Mercer Trust, with loans from museums and galleries across the UK. It contributes to Blackburn’s ongoing journey of cultural renewal through art, heritage, and community collaboration.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am – 4:45pm. Free entry.
