On Monday 4th May from 11am–12pm, Care UK’s Edgbaston Manor, on Speedwell Road is throwing its own 1940s-themed parties to honour the anniversary of VE Day.
VE Day marks the moment Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.
Edgbaston Manor resident John Gibbions, 91, said: “Celebrating VE is important because we still need to remember and support. I remember being evacuated to go to Nottingham when I was younger, and my mum didn’t like us being away from her. She stayed in Birmingham in Summer Lane, and she wanted us home.”
During the celebration, residents and guests can enjoy an afternoon of delicious 1940s-themed food, live entertainment and plenty of dancing as they come together to embrace the spirit of the era.
Zoe Steventon, Home Manager at Edgbaston Manor, said: “We’re so excited to be opening our doors to the people of Edgbaston for our VE Day celebrations.
“This event offers a wonderful opportunity to reawaken nostalgic memories and provides a meaningful way for older people, including those living with dementia, to connect with others while commemorating such a significant moment in history.”
Edgbaston Manor has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence. The home provides full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care, and has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents. There is also plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
