Heritage Crafts at the Hive is a new year long programme, featuring a new heritage craft each month. This series of workshops and courses is celebrating Birmingham’s award of World Craft City status by the World Crafts Council in 2025. Each craft will be showcased in a display in the Hive’s Heritage Lounge, skilled craft practitioners will lead craft sessions, and an exhibition in the Gallery in May 2027 will showcase Birmingham based craftspeople.
Our Heritage Craft programme celebrates Chain Making this month. Join us for a unique experience with the Hive’s resident jeweller, Julie Smith of Star 23. Explore Birmingham and the Midlands significant heritage of chain making, which formed part of the 1000 Trades it was known for. We’re exploring chain making for Jewellery in these workshops. Learn more about the process of chain making, experiment with a wide variety of shapes, and design and make your own copper or brass chain.
All materials supplied. Suitable for beginner and intermediate skill sets, 15+. We will use cold connections to make the chains but soldering can be arranged with Julie in a separate workshop.
