The untold story of Jane Austen's brief engagement
"Twelve Hours" is a play about Jane Austen's brief engagement to Harris Bigg-Wither, specifically the 12 hours between her acceptance and rejection of his proposal. The play is written by local Jane Austen historian and tour guide Phil Howe and is performed by Charlotte Barnes. It focuses on the intense and often overlooked period where Austen accepted a proposal from Bigg-Wither, the owner of the Manydown estate, and then changed her mind the following morning. The play is a 60-minute monologue.
