However, upon reaching the age of 70 you are required to renew your licence and you must make a specific request to the DVLA in the application if you want to retain your towing entitlement.

People who passed their driving test from 1 January 1997 can only tow light trailers up to 750kg. If you’re in this category you can tow a trailer though, displaying “L” plates, if you’re accompanied by a driver who has previously passed the Category B & E test.

New rules will come into force for those who pass their test from 19 January 2013 onwards.
