During the course of buying a car from Donna Obstfeld from DOHR, Donna mentioned BNI to me. I had heard of it before but avoided it as the early morning meetings simply didn’t suit me. When I found out it was a lunch time meeting I couldn’t fault the idea of at least visiting.The welcome I received and the amount of business being passed in the room clinched it and I joined the next week.That was a year ago and BNI is now an essential part of my business. I was a long time member at a BNI breakfast group but found the early mornings conflicted with my late night business. Eventually I left BNI but found that there was a gap in my business.When I discovered a lunch time BNI Chapter I was more than happy to rejoin, and relish once again having a business support network around me. More than that, I must confess that this "Alpha" BNI group is better by far than my first group in terms of the quality of members. The group has a rock solid committee which steers the Chapter as if it were the board of a top notch, blue chip PLC. It sets targets, it motivates the members and it makes it THE place to be.BNI is not for everyone. It requires dedication, energy and commitment. Nearly one year I am a member of BNI Alpha and I see a good progress. My company is growing and my communication skills too. My business has been trading for 25 years. I was invited along to a meeting of BNI Alpha in Mill Hill in November 2011. Initially I had reservations as to whether or not this was something that would benefit our company. I joined BNI Alpha in March 2009 and since that time I have been amazed by the positive effect that it has had. First introduced to BNI in 2007 when DOHR was established, I understood the concept immediately, but the time of the breakfast meetings did not work for me or my family.The lunchtime format provides me with a structured framework for generating new business. It has taken time as people don't understand the benefits of HR like they do photographers, printers or accountants. Over the last three years, I have built relationships with fellow members through regular 121s, weekly 60 second marketing slots and 6 monthly 10 minute business presentations.It has taken time, but over the last three years the amount of business generated from my BNI membership has significantly increased and now produces a robust income stream without which my business may not have grown and survived.Apart from the benefits to the business, I have developed great relationships with other local business owners who provide me with moral and practical support. I joined BNI Alpha as I knew the power of networking but was never able to make the traditional BNI breakfast meetings. Upon discovery that there was a BNI lunchtime meeting available I was very pleased to find BNI Alpha in Mill Hill. The group is very welcoming and I have formed great business and personal relationships with many of the members and the increase in business is noticeable in my monthly turnover.I am a huge advocate of networking and feel its an essential part of any business marketing plan. As a one-man-band, running a business can sometimes be a lonely process.
