- The first recorded celebration of the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot took place in 1607 in Bristol.
- Until 1859, it was illegal not to celebrate it.
- The cellars of the Houses of Parliament are still searched before the opening of each new Parliament.
- In 1978 a receipt for the illicit gunpowder was found in the Office of Public Records. It cost 15s 6d to remove it from the House of Lords to the arsenal at the Tower of London.
- Guy Fawkes was named the 30th greatest Briton in a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002.
