This was our first ever stay in a Holiday Inn and it won't be the last.
We stayed one night on a stopover en route to Scotland.
Room was very quiet despite overlooking a busy road junction and we slept well.
Breakfast was superb - great choice of quality cooked items, lovely pastries and all very well presented. Probably the best hotel breakfast I have had for many a year.
Highly recommended.

Stayed here for just 1 night as a convenient stopping off point. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. The room and bathroom were large and clean and tidy. There was a good choice of food in the restaurant and the prices were reasonable. There is car parking on a first come first serve basis. If you can't find a space, there is a public car park immediately next door so very convenient.
Definitely well above average for a city centre hotel in terms of staff courtesy!

Stayed here for one Saturday night. Staff were helpful and check in was quick. We stayed on the top floor which was quiet. The room itself was very small and we had a tiny bathroom. We couldn't open the windows but there was very good air conditioning. We were rudely woken up at 7 am with an automatic alarm call - despite the fact we hadn't ordered one !!!! We were told that there was a problem with their system and we weren't the only ones. Great quality breakfast, very well presented and lots of choice.

I've stayed at this hotel for a total of 10 nights throughout the year after block booking to attend a course run at the hotel's function suites. The good points include decent room sizes, a decent array of TV channels, reasonably comfortable beds and a convenient location for road and rail travel. The "could do better" points are inconsistency in the levels of service, sometimes I get biscuits in my room, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I get a flannel, sometimes I don't. Sometimes my room is vacuumed every day, sometimes it doesn't get vacuumed at all throughout my stay. Sometimes, the wardrobe is full of thick dust that needs to be wiped before I place clothes in it, sometimes its immaculately clean. The "should do better" points are poor wifi, where you have to pay for a normal useable level of access. A Badly stained carpet that should have been replaced before allocating the room to guests. A general lack of care, such as allocating conference rooms inappropriately that were forseeably noisy and unsuitable for studying guests. The bad points would include being located on a busy main road. Thin wall between rooms. Poorly fitted electrical points that don't always accept regular plugs as they should. Not replacing damaged furniture such as wobbly chairs. Poor "in room" lighting which makes studying in the evening difficult. The bar and restaurant area is clean and smart but the beer prices are extortionate, £4.60 a pint when the nearest local pub was selling beer for just £1.99 a pint.

I stayed here for 2 nights on business. The hotel isn't attractive and is a bit of 1980's office block sort of building. However, bar and restaurant are well appointed and my room (whilst a typical HI room) was clean and comfortable. The two things that set this hotel apart from other HI's are a) the staff and b) the food. The staff were excellent. They are more or less all local, which is so refreshing, so they know the area and can tell one things about walks and shopping. This sounds obvious but is sadly so rare nowadays in city centre hotels. B) the food was better than average HI food - some really tasty dishes on the menu (such as the seafood spring rolls and the gnocchi).

I can happily recommend this hotel and would stay again.

I can think of nothing warm and positive to say about this place. It was not particularly attractive, and parking facilities are minimal.

I used the bar in the evening, and sat next to a very unpleasant individual who ate his (looked like) chicken curry with his fingers, scooping it up with his chips - grunting all the while. Now, to be fair, the hotel isn't directly responsible for its clientele, but I wonder if it says something about the people who choose to stay there? Don't know. Anyway, didn't linger long in the bar.

I was room only (£77 midweek paid in advance) - I didn't want a full breakfast, just some tea and toast. They tried to sell me a full cooked breakfast (£13) but I pointed out it would only be £5 if I ordered tea/toast in the lounge - and would be more work. Grudgingly, they allowed me what I wanted.

Some colleagues met me in the (dark) bar for a few drinks in the morning - no-one came to take a drinks order, so eventually I tracked someone down.

Room was clean and quiet, price of room was good - but it just wasn't a particularly exciting stay.

Room had free wifi - but it was so slow, I switched back to 3G.

This is a lovely hotel with an excellent buffet style breakfast, we had a nice room on the 7th floor which was clean and suited our needs :) I would of given a 5 star review, however Colchester football team were staying there and we were overlooked at breakfast and the duty manager was obviously in awe of this and ushered the players through at breakfast without a cursory check of room numbers, whereas we had to wait and duly gave our room number and told to sit anywhere, double standards, but it didn't distract from our stay and we will stay again as it suits our needs :) thank you for a comfortable stay

Looks pretty grim outside, but it was quite nice inside. I had a good night sleep, the room was quiet and clean. The staff were friendly, however during my reasonably short stay there were quite a few silly mistakes made. I would stay here again.

The rooms were adequate and clean, but quite dated. Bathroom needed a refurbishment. We missed seeing staff showing the "northern hospitality" as everything seemed too much trouble for them. Meals took a long time to arrive and menu choices were very limited. The food was extremely salty and over spiced, although we do usually enjoy a spicy meal. Although the plates came out hot, the food temperature lead a lot to be desired!
A special mention to Sheila on reception who was smiley, and very helpful in answering our requests.
