This was our third visit in last 16 months and in all instances we have come up to watch a football match at Ewood Park and stop over. Our last stay was in January. Unlike our previous 2 visits we had a room in the main hotel. The room was absolutely fine, albeit we were at the front of the hotel above the main entrance so it was a bit noisier late on due to guests or visitors chatting or starting cars on the car park. Was certainly not an issue as such, just noticeable compared to the previous 2 visits. Only other thing to mention about the room was the extremely squeaky floorboards, but as nobody was staying beneath us, it was fine and of course is to be expected in an old building.

Staff were polite and helpful. We opted to have dinner in the bar, rather than the restaurant on this stay and our main courses were okay; not memorable, but perfectly fine. Likewise with breakfast. There was plenty of choice though and I left feeling I'd eaten enough.

The biggest disappointment of the stay was being told I would have to pay £10 each for my son and I to go swimming. It was a bit awkward as we had gone to the spa and waited for a member of staff, who told us we needed a swimming pass, so off we went to Reception to ask for said pass and that is where we learnt about the charge. Apparantly this is for every visit you undertake during your stay, not a charge for the duration of your stay. Sounds a bit off to me but that's what I was told. We declined to pay so didn't get to go swimming in the end. Was ultimately our choice. I was told this changed in March and I have just seen another poster make reference to this same point from back in March. A quick check of my emails and I can't find the one I was told had been sent to customers regarding this decision. Am not going to quibble on that point, but I only booked the room a couple of weeks ago and it's certainly not mentioned in my booking email.

The bottom line is that these trips are a treat for my son and me. The USP of the Dunkenhalgh for us was the spa facilities being included in the total cost (not necessarily the room or food) and whilst that remains an option, I am put off by the additional charge for guests for what is effectively an hour's swim in our case. May sound petty, but this may have been our last visit.

Overnight stay attending a wedding nearby.
Warm welcome at reception, checked we’d entered car reg on the pad at reception. Clear directions to room and facilities. Helpful sheet with local taxi numbers (reliable service from them too).
Room was spotless, bed exceptionally comfortable and facilities in the room and hotel well maintained. Didn’t use Spa but will next time.
Reception, Bar and Restaurant staff were wonderful, listened to guests and dealt quickly and professionally with queries - postive, friendky attitudes all around, created a relaxing atmosphere.
Bar and breakfast food was delicious , fair price and portion size.
Thank you to Sarah, and Vanessa for managing our booking.
A special mention to Aziz who managed breakfast buffet with panache -loved his exuberance and the kindness he showed to guests and colleagues.

I got married here end of April - Hired the Dunklaw suite for the ceremony and meal I hired a venue dresser who dressed it lovely - everything went smoothly thanks to Danielle/Athena who planned the wedding to Edwina on the day and a big shout out to aziz who on the day went above and beyond to make sure everyone was happy.
Lovely food
Also used the spa which was lovely but can struggle for sun loungers especially at peak times.
Would definitely recommend to hold your wedding here it has lovely grounds for photos.

We were at the Cameo Restaurant to celebrate a family birthday. The staff in the restaurant went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect evening. Sara in charge was WONDERFUL. Welcoming us ensuring my sister felt special on her 80th birthday. Giving her a complementary drink as we sat at the table. She directed her young staff perfectly and knew all drink and food orders. After the meal I asked for a dessert and candle. The staff came out singing and we ended our happy occasion on such a happy note. Thank you all for a splendid evening.

The pictures show quite a grand, historic building that would be the kind of place we would choose to stay in normally, but beyond the front of the building , it is all very tired indeed.
Reception smells like something has died in the cellar below and the receptionist told us they were bringing in a company to find out where the smell was coming from, but not a great first impression.
We were told we had been given an upgrade to 'an executive room' which could be found down the endless corridors in the building behind the main hotel. To get there, you passed another function room that also smelled of damp rot, through several doors that have been badly repainted numerous times and down an external walkway where the wooden balustrades were collapsing an had been badly patched up with various planks of unpainted wood. The exterior walls of the hotel (especially at the back) have paint hanging off them and look in a very sorry state.
The hotel is huge and desperately in need of some serious TLC. It feels like one of the 'end of life' type hotels that are purchased by Best Western.
The only part of the hotel that felt up to standard was the Spa lounge and bar but probably because they are the areas generating the most revenue. We were not charged for the £10 per person fee for the use of the pool (which I would have resented greatly if they had tried), but would have had to pay to hire a robe at £5 each per visit..so we didn't bother.
The staff were lovely in the restaurant, but most of the already very limited meal options on the menu were unavailable due to having been busy for the previous few days. This is not an acceptable excuse for a hotel to run out of food when offering a dinner bed and breakfast package, where people book to stay with plenty of notice.
Breakfast was functionally ok but quite average and the evening meals were also ok but nothing to get excited about.
I wouldn't return as the place is shabby and smells bad despite the staff being very attentive. They are simply working with what they have to offer.
I certainly wouldn't hold a wedding or function at this hotel because it feels cheap, old and neglected. Shame really because the pictures make it look a lot nicer.

I couldn't fault this - my first spa weekend! And this hotel was amazing. They pulled out all the stops to make my birthday special. From the "Happy Birthday" message painted on the mirror in the room and the balloons & brownies left in there when we walked in! To the unexpected, complimentary prosecco cocktail brought over by the waitress during our evening meal and the Pool Access thrown into our package, even though we (inadvertently) didn't book it - again because it was my birthday. It's these little personal touches that get remembered and make you feel welcome - and bring you back 😊
The hotel is immaculately clean, the room perfect and comfortable, the food and drink delicious, the pool warm, calm and relaxing and I'm just about to go in for my shoulder neck and back massage, which I'm sure won't disappoint - if the rest of the weekend is anything to go by.
Five stars from us 😁

Following my treatment at the spa I wanted to purchase a single item. However, as I was ready to pay, I was told that the item was £31, £10 more than the price initially quoted and on the spa’s website. I enquired from two different staff members whether this pricing was correct to which I was told that it was. I also emailed the general manager of the spa regarding the dodgy pricing and was told it was human error and as he did not serve me himself he could not say why. Please be aware!
