The spa was good, we pre booked our treatments, but they were moved by 30mins prior to our arrival which meant we had to change our meal booking for later on. We booked a twin room and arrived to a double room made up, (see picture) we went to reception and to compensate us we were offered a free drink (excluding fine wine, spirits and champagne). We booked early check in and that took 20mins to complete at a non busy time (arrive on plenty of time there was only one receptionist when we did...and check-in is open from 3pm usually and there are 2 check in desks). Out room was in the courtyard, it was on need of a little TLC (see room review)and was very warm, there was no aircon and the fan was too noisy to have on, even during the daytime, so defo not at night in the room...but there was an additional plug in radiator so it must get very cold in colder weather) there was an iron, ironing board and hairdryer supplied, and shampoo, shower gel and hand wash, nice quality.
The changing rooms for the spa need a serious upgrade, the looked like 1980 school ones, and the lockers are like a crystal maze puzzle to open and lock. The spa itself is downstairs and very relaxing the treatment rooms are air-conditioned which was nice as it was very hot everywhere else. The treatments me and my friend had were very different even though we booked the same ones but we're done by different people. ( some people had treatments cancelled when they arrived or moved to the following day). The relaxation room was lovely at the end of the treatment but we only had 30mi s in there before the spa closed. The pool was busy and had a very strong chlorine smell, and it also has family sessions which lead to the spar entry way becoming very congested. Some people got robes and towels included in their package but others did not, so check if not you can pay.for them I think it was either £5 of £7.50, same for towels and slippers.
The restaurant was understaffed, the greeter was rude and people were walking away and going to get takeout from places nearby. We waited with others for 20mins to be seated and we had all reserved our times, no one apologised for the wait, we were just greatest with name.l and shown to our table. Drinks were taken first and arrived quickly. We ordered starter and main and 40mins later hadn't even got our starter whilst others who arrived after had. It was hard to get staffs attention to check on progress except one guy who came over and resolved the problem quickly. By this time it was heading for after 9pm and we booked for 7.30. I cancelled my main, because it was too late for me to eat and my friend ended up getting a pizza In a Take out box as the restaurant was full even that took an additional 25mins.
Breakfast is self serve in the morning with a well stocked range of hot and cold food and juices and coffee. The man greeting and seating people was lovely much of an improvement over the night before.
Overall I wouldn't choose to stay here again as a first choice, for a Mercure hotel I expected better no matter what room you stayed in, based on past experiences. After the spa treatments you were given the sales pitch to try get you to buy the items used, which was a little overkill, the room not been set up as we had asked to start with them the issues with food in the restaurant just didn't make the overnight spa experience totally enjoyable for me.
Rooms: We had a standard room in the courtyard, it was showing signs of wear, the bathroom was outdated (big chunks of the door were missing from the bathroom side we stayed in room 41). Shower was in the bath and the bath was high to climb over into, people with mobility issues would struggle in this room. Beds were singles. The room was too hot even with the windows open all night. It did have usb sockets and plenty of plugs, and a massive TV which we were able to link up to. Did have good quality shower, hair and hand wash in rooms.
Food & drink: Food and drink onsite was not too badly priced for a hotel from what I saw it looked okay. The drinks were quite expensive. The starter I had was tasty and well presented Harris's hummus and garlic bread it was an okay portion size. The best meal was the breakfast. All the food was well stocked hot and cold, lots of fruits, yoghurts pastries, and your typical fry up. Toast was make it yourself but very quick to do, lots of different fruit juices as well as Ice water tea and coffee's. For food delivered to your room it's a £5 charge per person.
