Hertford is a lovely old town. Being the county town, it has always been quite important but its low population (less than 30,000) and historic centre have made it a good place to explore on a summer's day. The Castle itself has been largely demolished, though the Gatehouse is Grade I listed. It is only open at particular times of year (check the website for the next dates), and can be hired for events. The grounds, however, are open all year round, and well worth a stroll.

Information/interpretation boards are installed at key places, but confusingly use different numbering systems on the same board!

Without getting inside, you can only really allocate less than an hour to the Castle grounds, but if you go when it is open, then more time would be needed. Unfortunately our visit coincided with a closed day, so we spent the rest of our time looking around the historic town centre. Very worthwhile!

Haven't been here for years so went for a family stroll. Very clean and tidy with information signs on the history. Even though there's not much 'castle' to see the grounds are well kept. Parking is not too bad with a couple of local 'pay and displays' near by.

The grounds are a lovely way to spend some time a short distance from the town centre.
Hertford is an attractive little place with pieces of history dotted around.
The castle itself was a little uncastlelike, perhaps I was a little disappointed that it was not quite a Windsor Castle nor the fact it was open......i believe it is only open for corporate functions.
A pity....but the grounds are lovely.

Visited to watch 'Quantum Theatre' perform 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'. It was a fantastic performance (well done to the small cast) and was well organised and the Covid-19 precautions looked pretty good.

Have just exhibited at the Hertford Castle Christmas Market which took place over 3 days. What a fabulous event. Extremely well organised with a great selection of products, food and entertainment. Huge thanks to Debbie Baker for the hard work and effort she put in to make this event a success for stall holders and customers. If you didn't get a chance to attend, be sure to go along next year if they hold it again as you won't be disappointed.

Oasis in the town, complete with the moat, which today had been “yarn bombed” in commemoration of the diamond jubilee

The main green outside the building was used fora funday which was well supported.

Visited just before Xmas with a substantial Xmas fair and music laid out on the castle front lawn. Interesting history with castle much older than it looks. Nice grounds and original moat worth a stroll around on a visit to Hertford.
