This is such a lovely place. The castle is very elegant. Just lately there has been food festivals and music weekends there. Lovely to visit with the family.

The site of the castle can be found in the centre of the town, and today on the grounds of the castle a beautiful house and gardens can be found. There are traces of the original castle around the site, a gate house and curtain walls still remain.
The house is very interesting on the inside, and a collection of articles from the local mayors office are currently on display.
The gardens around the house are beautiful and are nice to wander around. I recommend a visit here.

Came here today as was open house weekend and knew the castle was open tithe public! Glad we did, lovely to walk around parts of it and see how it was from years ago! Basement is quite spooky! Lots of stalls today with events going on and with the weather being lovely it was very busy! Lovely few hours spent here 😀

This building has been heavily remodeled from its former appearance over the centuries. It's not a castle- more like a mansion-and wasn't open to the public when we stopped by today (although a giant banner outside the front gates said it was). The back side of the building is actually the most interesting with Tudor brickwork and the crumbling crest of Edward IV.

The castle is owned by the council and used for Civic events but has regular open days throughout the year. Located in the town centre parking close by is difficult so be prepared for a little walk. The grounds of the castle are pleasant gardens where you can see the remaining curtain wall and one gateway. The only real structure remaining from the castles heyday is the large gatehouse with Georgian extension. In side there was an excellent short video giving an overview of the history that was very interesting and acted as a great introduction. The rest of the gatehouse appeared to be council chambers with associated memorabilia. In the basement was a dungeon, garderobe and suits of armour but when I asked the staff if anything was authentic they admitted it was the Georgian wing and was just there for interpretation. There was however a small Georgia kitchen. So other then the exterior, which was unfortunately fronted by a car park there was little of the medieval fabric to see. A pleasant enough setting though if you're in the area.

I had my lunch sitting in the grounds and looking on to the Hertford castle. I noticed that there were joins in the walls surrounding the castle with different brickwork, which suggests there must have been changes, i wondered what they might be.

It is superb to have a castle in the middle of the town. The perifal walls are extant and a model of the inner buildings is on show in the Hertford museum. On named days the public can have a guided tour of the mayoral chambers upstairs. Some of the Knights Templar captured on the orders of Phillip the Fair were held in the tower before being taken to the Tower of London.

If people travelled here expecting to see an actual castle they would be extremely disappointed. It is mainly offices . However , the grounds are very pleasant to walk through or stop with a picnic . Lots of concerts in the summer and very pretty back drop of the castle lit up .

Took five grandchildren aged between 4-12 on the train to Hertford East for an Easter holiday activity. Our aim was to visit the museum, a ten minute walk from the station.
The staff were very helpful and gave us a lovely welcome. The displays were excellent and young person focused. We sat in the peaceful garden and ate our sandwiches. A fascinating and interesting couple of hours. Highly recommended.

Great place to engage with informed professionals. The course we had was a valuable aid to my confidence in research I was conducting.
