I attended the classic car day this morning with my boys age 7 and 11.i didn't know anything about it until this morning and Hertford is only 20 mins away.

The event was free. They had cars, a band and some food places as well as bouncy castles. They all seemed reasonably priced but I was skint.

They had the castle open too. We're not really touristy and as I had the fdig I had to race round with one child while the other dog sat. Downstairs in the basement was awesome. We saw the castle silver. They boys felt a real sword and a big ball with spikes on. They also had a go on the stocks.

A nice day. Enjoyed it. Will go again. The bands were good.

Actually very interesting. We lived in Hertford for 17 years and never visited. Moved abroad and came back to visit friends. Visited the castle and they have a very interesting display.

Visited the site for the 'rock the castle' event. What a fantastic range of great bands and so well organised. Brilliant.

I walk through with the dog regularly. There are park benches by the river or overlooking a green either at the front or rear of the "Castle" which is actually the Elizabethan gatehouse.

The remains of the castle is the old gatehouse, which is in use as a venue. The grounds are well kept with clever landscaping and little bridges.

It would take about 30 minutes to do a slow tourist paced amble around the circular walk.

Hertford is a lovely old town. Being the county town, it has always been quite important but its low population (less than 30,000) and historic centre have made it a good place to explore on a summer's day. The Castle itself has been largely demolished, though the Gatehouse is Grade I listed. It is only open at particular times of year (check the website for the next dates), and can be hired for events. The grounds, however, are open all year round, and well worth a stroll.

Information/interpretation boards are installed at key places, but confusingly use different numbering systems on the same board!

Without getting inside, you can only really allocate less than an hour to the Castle grounds, but if you go when it is open, then more time would be needed. Unfortunately our visit coincided with a closed day, so we spent the rest of our time looking around the historic town centre. Very worthwhile!

Haven't been here for years so went for a family stroll. Very clean and tidy with information signs on the history. Even though there's not much 'castle' to see the grounds are well kept. Parking is not too bad with a couple of local 'pay and displays' near by.
