I knew before I booked that there were mixed reviews. For the 3 aspects that influenced my booking (bath and shower, room with twin beds and a decent breakfast) I would rate as Very Good. Ample free parking is also a great plus point. The friendliness of the lovely lady at reception, the cleaning operatives and the breakfast team was also a real bonus - they would rate as Excellent. If there was a rating between average and very good I probably would have plumped for that. Now for the things that detract from the excellent staff and the very good facilities....The entrance road is not very well lit so we missed the turn off. We reported that one of the bulbs needed replacing in the light above one of the beds: apparently maintenance have to change lightbulbs and they are only there Mon-Friday 9-5. There were a lot of dead flies on the windowsill and I spotted two live ones that I dealt with. I managed to locate and block off the source of the flies (a gap in the wall behind the headboard) so didn't bother reporting. On the Friday night there was a Christmas Party night. I would have been OK if it hadn't gone on until 1am which seems very late to put up with loud music. I would go back but I would know in future to ask if they have any function bookings and what time the music will stop. The pool area is very dated and quite creepy - if there hadn't been some kids having swimming lessons I doubt I would have hung around! And finally on the Saturday night there was two busloads of very anti-social children rampaging through the hotel (playing football in the corridors). They were so noisy I couldn't read in the bath so bailed out and rang reception. When nothing happened I got dressed and as I was walking up the corridor to ask the children to stop being a nuisance two "responsible" adults turned up. I'm saying nothing further but there needs to be some ground rules set for large groups of under 16 year olds.

I'm here for the murder mystery, receptionist was lovely and really informative, Irene at the bar is absolutely the best ever, so funny and lovely. She is worth the stay alone.
Would definitely return and recommend!

We arrived at the Mercure on a very blustery day and the lovely warm lounge was at our disposal. Irene was very attentive and looked after us well. Our afternoon tea was well presented, delicious and very filling! Too much to eat whilst we were there, but Irene sorted out take home goody boxes. A very pleasant experience and we were able to watch TV too!

Great hotel but shame about the city it seems to be fizzling out. Room was spacious bright and clean and breakfast was great and free parking was a bonus. Preston itself needs an injection of life investment.

Seems to be best hotel in town and is what you would expect from Holiday Inn. Not fancy but a good class business hotel. Nicely decorated rooms, good breakfast and restaurant choices. About 15 mins walk to train station but next to bus station and city centre on door step

This really is a hotel with a mix of good and bad. It looks grim approaching it but inside its actually OK, so don't let that put you off.

First the good. The location is good and the parking was free and easy to access. If the car park is full there is discounted parking very close at just a few pounds a day. Staff were welcoming, the food in the bar was surprisingly good and the bar a nice place to sit. The room is comfortable and clean with a nice sized comfortable bed.

Now the not so good. While the food was good at the bar the choice of drinks was severely limited. It certainly didn't make me feel like staying for a few drinks even though I was in a position to do so. I would find somewhere else to have a business meeting which is a shame as there are some nicely laid out seating areas.

Now the awful. The Internet is crucial to many visitors (like me) and it is absolutely awful. It constantly loses connection and when you do manage to get a connection the speed is laughable. You can pay £5 for 24 hours prime connection. Don't, it really isn't worth it. The connection is no better than the free version.

I did a speed test. 1.75 MB download, 0.07 upload, ping 35. The connection speed is virtually the same in the bar. I tried to have a Skype meeting and in the end had to give up and apologise. Luckily it wasn't too critical and was with someone who was understanding.

The other really annoying thing is there was no plug socket anywhere near the bed. In this day of multiple devices needing charging this was really inconvenient.

Would I stay here again? Only if I bought a laptop rather than a tablet so I could actually get some work done as there are network access points in the room (untested.) If you don't care about Internet access then you would probably have a better time.

It is a Holiday Inn, so not exactly full of individual character but no-one would expect that in such a chain. It provides reliably clean and comfortable rooms, is quiet enough and the morning call came through ,cheerfully, at the expected time. The shower did not take too much working out. I did not have a breakfast this time but on my last visit it was a decent buffet.
The position is next door to Preston's famed brutalist bus station if you are interested in either architecture or buses.

You pretty much know what you're going to get in a Holiday Inn so no real surprises. My room was clean and tidy but a disappointing gap where the fridge should be and although the air con was new and good, it times out so I woke up very warm as it needed to be switched back on.

The service was brilliant - everyone was very friendly and helpful and it's probably the most friendly breakfast service I have encountered.

There is not that much immediately around the hotel but it is a short walk from the main centre. I walked from the train station and it takes about 15 minutes.

I would stay here again.

We stayed a Friday night only so we could attend the game at Deepdale. The ground is 15 minutes walk, strolling, from the hotel and the train station a similar distance the other way. The hotel is well located on the ring road, but with mainly offices and roads by it it will never be described as attractive. However you use a hotel to stay in it, not stand outside looking at it.

Inside it's got everything you need really. The rooms are standard, clean, comfortable bed, reasonable wi-fi, a bar that would do a Lufthansa lounge proud (i.e. more functional than warm), breakfast had the standard selection needed plus porridge was visible, presumably accommodating the group of tourists we saw. ThHat is a good sign as it shows te hotel is altert to customer needs. The staff we met were freindly to a fault, everyone was warm and that's always a plus, and a credit ot the hotel.

My complaint would be there's a lift on the entry area which is actually one floor below reception. I always worry about security in that scenario. The walls are also not too thick so neighbour noise can be heard. It was not a problem for us but I could see it being one. However I am very sure they wold move you if needed without any complaint.

Perfect for a night or two in town, no hassles.

Worth noting Preston Pride was the day after and it looked ot be a good musical time in the town on the Sat night with close off roads and several bandstands. Had we konwn in advance we would have been happy to stay another night in the hotel.
