Hi
At the women's 5000m race in Rio this week two Olympic athletes tumbled to the ground in a messy mishap and caused the whole stadium to gasp out loud!
Abbey D’Agostino of the United States and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand collided on the 5000m track just four laps from the finish of the qualifying heat – an athlete’s worst nightmare! - especially when it happens at the Olympics with millions of people aroundthe world watching!
After witnessing D’Agostino laying on the track with no sign of getting back up, Hamblin crouched down to pull her up and urged her to finish the race.
Refusing to give up, D’Agostino conquered the rest of the race, with Hamblin at her side for support.
The couple strove for the finish line where they came in last and threw themselves into a heart-warming embrace after finally crossing the line.
These inspiring athletes weren't on the same team - they were competitors. But in that one moment, they became friends, team mates, peers and won the hearts of the world by looking out for one another.
Hamblin says, “When I look back on
Rio 2016, I’m not going to remember where I finished, I’m not going to remember my time… but I’ll always remember that moment."
It is this sportsmanship coupled with sheer determination that reminds us to never give up on our dreams and goals.
Have an amazing day!
