Established 25 years ago, the UK Youth Parliament is made up of more than 300 young people aged between 11 and 18. Elected as Members of Youth Parliament, they represent the views of their peers and can bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning.
Current Young MP Sienna Ahir said: “To serve as Youth MP for Wolverhampton has been a privilege – allowing me to advocate around the issues defining our lives today. It has taught me the power of youth voice, and how pivotal it is to empower the next generation shape our future.”
This year, 7 young people – Nana Antwi, Troy Cox, Hephzibah Kalapala, Daiya Nahal, Shyarna Reid, Poppy Vaghela and Princess Williams – are standing for election, with polls open until 13 March.
Voting is taking place electronically, offering young people a unique opportunity to see how this type of voting could work in the future. Schools have also received a virtual ballot box. To find out more visit Wolverhampton Youth MP Elections.
Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "Our Youth MPs have had a tremendous impact over the last 25 years, giving a voice to real experiences, challenging decision makers and helping to shape a future that works for everyone.
“I would encourage children and young people to cast their vote for their new Youth MP, as this is how they can turn their ideas into action.”
The election coincides with the Electoral Commission’s Welcome to Your Vote Week from 9 March to 13 March, which encourages schools to teach pupils about, and celebrate, democracy. During this time secondary schools and voluntary youth groups in the city will be asked to elect Youth Councillors to serve on the City of Wolverhampton Council from April 2026 to December 2027.
