Stay alert to scams linked to digital switchover

Criminals are known to exploit periods of change to target vulnerable people, including those who use Telecare and other technology enabled care devices.

There have been reports nationally of individuals being contacted and asked to provide personal or financial information, or to make payments for services that should not be requested in this way.

Residents should be aware that the digital switchover is a national programme led by telecommunications providers and is free of charge. The council and its technology enabled care (Telecare) providers will not ask for payment or financial details over the phone, and any unexpected or suspicious contact requesting personal information should be treated with caution.

Councillor Linda Leach, Cabinet Member for Adults, said: "We know the move to digital services will bring real benefits, but it’s important people feel confident and safe as these changes happen. Unfortunately, scammers sometimes try to take advantage of this by contacting residents out of the blue and asking for personal or financial information.

"If you receive an unexpected call or message about your telephone line or equipment and you are unsure, you should not share any personal or financial information, you should end the call, and you should contact your provider or the council directly to verify the information. You can also report any concerns you may have to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

“If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts - taking that extra moment to double check can make all the difference.”

The UK’s transition from analogue to digital landlines is expected to be completed by early 2027. While most people will experience a straightforward upgrade, additional support is available for those who rely on telecare devices or have specific needs.
