City of Wolverhampton Council has installed new digital LED road signage - and is set to make further improvements to city centre footways.

The new low energy LED signs, which are linked directly to the city council’s highways team, enable it to communicate a wide range of information to its residents and visitors including road safety messages, destination information and parking information, to improve traffic management.

Nine new signs have been installed at Ring Road/Stafford Road junction, Ring Road/Waterloo Road, Chapel Ash Island and Penn Road Island.

They will also be used to promote key city events and support national and local campaigns.

The long-term plan is to install LED signage around the entire ring road and its approaches.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “The new LED signs are a step in the right direction for our city.

“The great thing about them is they can be updated with the touch of a button, providing up to date travel information and inform drivers about any emerging problems on the roads such as accidents and road closures.

“This technology will help motorists decide what routes to take, optimise the available parking spaces in the city centre, reduce congestion and ultimately help to declutter our roads.

“It will make it easier for people to get to where they want to go and help us to create a smarter city.”

In addition to this, the city council is also set to resurface Dudley Street between Queen Square and Queen Street. Repairs will also be undertaken in and around the rest of Dudley Street.

The works will improve the footways for pedestrians and delivery vehicles.

They will begin next week and are set for completion in April. During this time access to all shops, businesses and homes will be maintained.

As one of our prime retail areas, which sees the highest footfall in the city – it is important the area offers excellent public realm in line with our ambitious development plans for the city centre.”
