The school run will be made safer for hundreds more pupils, pre-schoolers and their families through the City of Wolverhampton Council’s latest Safer Routes to School project.

Work is taking place on Bushbury Lane and Collingwood Road, near Bushbury Nursery School and Northwood Park Primary School.

The measures include a new zebra crossing on Bushbury Lane, a pedestrian refuge in Collingwood Road, upgraded signs and road markings, flashing 20mph limit signs, school zone markings and dragons’ teeth.

All existing road markings in the vicinity of the schools will be refreshed and traffic bollards will also be introduced at key locations to prevent dangerous parking and improve pedestrian routes and visibility.

Work is taking place through the school summer holidays and will be ready for the start of the new term.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “Our Safer Routes to School projects make it safer and easier for children and their families to walk or cycle to school by reducing traffic risks, which in turn encourages healthy and active lifestyles.

“They also help lower traffic congestion and emissions near schools

creating cleaner, safer and more connected communities for everyone.”

Hundreds of pupils across the city have already benefitted from Safer Routes to School projects and Local Safety Schemes and more are planned for 2025/26, funded through the council’s highways capital programme.

As was announced in June, to help enforce school keep clear zones the council’s Mobile Enforcement Vehicle (MEV) has been upgraded with high-definition cameras and will be patrolling outside schools at peak times.

The MEV will capture video footage of potential parking violations, which will be reviewed by an independent officer. If a contravention is confirmed, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), along with photographic evidence, will be issued within 28 days.

This is supported by daily enforcement officer foot patrols at sites across the city too.
