City of Wolverhampton Council is also preparing to roll out a second Mobile Enforcement Vehicle (MEV) targeting drivers ignoring school keep clear zones.
Officers on foot patrols are visiting dozens of sites across the city every week focusing on those flouting traffic restrictions at drop off and pick up times, including parking on pavements and double yellow lines in streets surrounding schools.
They are backed up by the existing Mobile Enforcement Vehicle (MEV), which is equipped with an intelligent enforcement system using GPS to recognise where parking restrictions begin and end in school keep clear zones, and some bus stops.
It captures video footage of potential parking violations, which is reviewed by an independent officer. If a contravention is confirmed, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), along with photographic evidence, will be issued by post within 28 days.
Since the first MEV was upgraded with new technology at the start of September last year nearly 500 PCNs have been issued to those illegally parking in school keep clear zones and dozens more to those parking in bus stops. A second MEV will now hit the streets of Wolverhampton early this year.
The enforcement work supports Safer Routes to School measures implemented by the council at schools across the city including new zebra crossings, speed bumps, improved signage and school keep clear zones.
More schools are in line to benefit from these measures during 2026.
Councillor Qaiser Azeem, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “Keeping children safe on their journey to and from school is one of our top priorities.
“Illegal parking outside schools puts lives at risk and causes unnecessary congestion.
“By introducing another hi-tech enforcement vehicle, we’re sending a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.
“These measures, alongside our Safer Routes to School improvements, will help create a safer, healthier environment for pupils, parents and the wider community."
