He took over the chains of office from outgoing Mayor Councillor Craig Collingswood at an inauguration during last night’s (Wednesday 20 May, 2026) Annual Council Meeting. His wife Ranjit Dhillon is Mayoress.

Councillor Wendy Thompson was appointed Deputy Mayor for 2026-27, with her cousin Caraline Holding acting as her consort.

Councillor Singh, who lives in Wednesfield and has served the Penn Ward since 2007, was Deputy Mayor for the 2025-26 municipal year and said: "I am absolutely delighted to be appointed the 167th Mayor of Wolverhampton.

"It's a huge honour, and I'm really looking forward to meeting all the wonderful people in our city and visiting all the groups which do such good work in our communities.

“I'd like to help them in any way I can, so please invite me to your events and, if I am able to, I will come along and show my support.”

Councillor Singh has chosen four charities to support during his Mayoral year, including 2 sporting organisations – Wolverhampton Judo Club, which was formed in 1966 and is widely recognised to be among the UK’s premier judo clubs, and Wolverhampton Boxing Club, one of the oldest established boxing clubs in the UK, founded in 1936 by a group of local businessmen headed by Harry Dallard.

He said: "My motto for my year as Mayor will be Through Sports We Grow, because I've grown through sport. It’s made a huge difference to my life, and I've seen the good that it has done for others, too; I am delighted to select 2 of our premier sporting clubs as my first couple of charities.”

Mayor Councillor Singh is also a lifelong Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, with his first match being Wolves' 7-1 demolition of Chelsea at Molineux in 1975. Reflecting on the club’s recent relegation, the Mayor has a message of hope for fellow fans: "Wolves is a big part of our city – I know we're struggling at the moment, but I'm sure we're going to bounce back."

His other chosen charities are The Friends of Di's Kitchen, which provides food to anyone in need across Wolverhampton, delivered to their homes once a week by a team of dedicated volunteers, and Inspire You, which aims to develop, support and nurture young people, offering practical training, coaching and mentoring to equip them with the tools they need to fulfil their purpose in life.

The Mayor said: "All 4 of my charities are very much grassroots organisations which sometimes don't get the recognition they deserve for the incredible work they do and the lives they change, and I am determined to raise vital funds for them all over the next 12 months.”

He added: "I would like to thank everyone for their support, because I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. I'm going to try and make this a wonderful year, and if there's anything I can do for you, please get in touch with the Mayoral office. We are also going to be doing a lot of events, so please follow us on social media for more information."
