All children from Reception to Year 11, including those who are home educated, are eligible for the vaccination again this year. For the majority of children, the vaccine will be given via a nasal spray. For children who require a pork gelatine-free alternative, or who are unable to have the nasal spray for medical reasons, an injectable vaccination is available on request.

Vaccinations are given by healthcare professionals from Vaccination UK in primary, secondary and special schools throughout the autumn term. Catch up clinics will also be available at various locations around Wolverhampton and the Black Country.

Schools are providing information about the vaccine to families of eligible children, and parents and carers are encouraged to give consent as soon as possible to ensure their child doesn't miss out.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: “We know the start of the new school year is a very busy time for families, with new uniforms, timetables and lots else to stay on top of.

“But there’s one other vital thing to keep track on at this time, and that's your child’s flu vaccine consent form.

“Children can catch and spread flu very easily, and it can be very serious for younger children or vulnerable members of the family.

“Vaccination offers the best protection against flu and for most children it is given via a painless nasal spray, rather than injection. It helps protect your child and also helps stop flu spreading to others.

“Vaccinations are underway in the city's schools, with nurses moving from school to school between now and December, so please look out for your consent form and complete it in good time – it only takes a few minutes but makes a real difference.”

Children aged two and three, and children with some long-term health conditions, are also eligible for the flu vaccine, either at their GP or from some participating pharmacies.
