The former Oxley Day Training Centre in Probert Road site has been cleared following demolition works and proposals were in place for a mixture of new homes and a health and wellbeing facility to be constructed.
However, a decision by health and social care providers, initially interested in occupying the new facility, to instead continue with existing provision in the community, has seen a switch to developing much needed housing for local people across the entire site.
The council’s Cabinet will be asked next Wednesday (15 October) to approve the decision and increase the number of new homes in the scheme from 23 apartments to 36 family houses, subject to planning approval.
External funding is already in place for the scheme and a housing development partner is expected to deliver the 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes, with off street parking, also unlocking the adjacent Rakegate Woodland for community use.
City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Development, Jobs and Skills, Councillor Chris Burden, said: “This is yet another example of the council bringing derelict brownfield land back into meaningful use for its communities.
“Local residents have played a key part in the journey to get to this point - and the proposed new scheme will deliver much needed quality homes for local people in their neighbourhood.
“Subject to final planning approval, I look forward to seeing bricks coming out of the ground next year, with at least 25% expected to be affordable homes.”
