New council camera car hits the streets increasing school road safety patrols

Mobile Enforcement Vehicles (MEV) are equipped with an intelligent enforcement system which automatically capture evidence of those ignoring school keep clear zones – with fines then sent to drivers.

The new vehicle, which is already in action, means double the number of MEV patrols outside schools during school run times.

The council has also recently stepped-up its foot patrol enforcement near schools at peak times targeting those parking on pavements, double yellow lines, or flouting other restrictions.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for City Transport, said: “The expansion of our camera car patrol helps us continue tackling dangerous and inconsiderate parking particularly near schools at busy times.

“Drivers put pupils at risk by ignoring the rules, and the message is clear - this will not be tolerated.

“By doubling our Mobile Enforcement Vehicle patrols, we are strengthening our commitment to safer streets and supporting the wider improvements we’re making around schools across the city.

“We want every child to be able to travel safely, and these measures will help us achieve exactly that.”

Since the first MEV was upgraded with new technology at the start of September last year it has led to more than 700 Penalty Charge Notices being issued to those illegally parking in school keep clear zones and bus stops - with money reinvested into further enforcement work.

The MEVs capture video footage of potential parking violations, which is reviewed by an independent officer. If a contravention is confirmed, a PCN, along with photographic evidence, will be issued by post within 28 days.

The increased enforcement work supports Safer Routes to School measures implemented by the council across the city including new zebra crossings, speed bumps, improved signage and school keep clear zones.

Even more schools are in line to benefit from these measures during 2026/2027.
