Eight Year 6 pupils took part in a programme of activities designed to build confidence, encourage teamwork and open up conversations about the transition ahead.
The day, organised by the City of Wolverhampton Council's Virtual School, used football and the unique setting of Molineux to create a relaxed and engaging environment. Pupils took part in team building and communication activities, had time to talk openly about any worries they may have, and enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the stadium.
The event also gave the children a chance to meet others in care from different schools, helping them to build new friendships and realise they are not alone in facing the transition.
Darren Martindale, Virtual School Head, said: "This transition can be particularly challenging for some vulnerable pupils. They will be coping with a range of new challenges, as well as opportunities, and it’s important that we offer extra support.
"Football is a great mechanism for that, especially with a World Cup underway, and we would like to thank staff at Molineux for helping to make the day such a success and for providing a memorable experience for everyone involved."
Councillor Jacqui Coogan, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "Moving up to secondary school is a big step for any young person, and for children in care it can come with added challenges.
"It’s wonderful to see opportunities like this that build confidence, create connections and make that transition feel more positive."
