Heather Wastie - Key Change for the Future

Back in the 1960s Heather Wastie (pictured) learned to play the piano in the front room of her family home – a terraced house in Cradley Heath - and began writing her own songs. When the family moved to Rowley Regis, the piano came too and Heather continued honing her songwriting skills.

In 1974 she began studying Music and Maths at Birmingham University and met another songwriter, guitarist Andy, who was also studying Maths. In the basement of the Hall of Residence where Heather lived there was a piano. In that small room the following year, Heather and Andy began their songwriting partnership. 47 years later, they released their debut album ‘Voice On The Radio’ which was immediately picked up by BBC Introducing who featured every single track.

Now, having worked together for over 50 years, their second album is almost finished and, by way of celebration, they have decided it’s time to change their band name! So they commissioned Wolverhampton artist Alex Vann to create new artwork, inspired by their music, new name and backstory.

On Sunday January 4th at 4pm, Heather’s work will be featured on Ian Henery’s Black Country Xtra show when the new band name will be revealed, so tune in to find out more!
