The consultation is now open and can be accessed at https://consultation.wolverhampton.gov.uk/housing/private-sector-housing-assistance-policy/
The Private Sector Housing Assistance Policy sets out what financial help may be available to support eligible residents with home adaptations, improvements and essential works, including Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) and discretionary assistance.
Underpinned by national legislation, it is designed to help people live safely and independently at home, support timely hospital discharge, focus funding on those with the greatest need, and ensure budgets are used fairly and responsibly.
The refreshed draft policy takes into account current practice and priorities, and proposes a wider, clearer range of discretionary support alongside the mandatory DFG offer.
Councillor Steve Evans, the council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Housing, said: “The council wants to ensure the policy is clear, fair, and focused on helping those who need support most.
“It explains the types of help the council can offer to support residents to improve their homes, making them safer, better suited to their needs, and easier to live in independently.
“The consultation is an opportunity for residents, carers, professionals, community organisations, and other partners to help shape the final approach before it is adopted – I would urge people to have their say.”
The consultation closes on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Anyone unable to complete the consultation online can request a paper copy to be sent by post by calling the council on 01902 551155. Alternative formats such as large print or translation can be arranged and responses can also be submitted by email at housing.strategy@wolverhampton.gov.uk
