A consultation on the draft strategy began this morning (Monday 12 January, 2026) and will run until Sunday 22 February, 2026, gathering feedback from key stakeholders to ensure the final strategy reflects the needs and priorities of local people.
Under the Equality Act 2010, councils must prepare and implement an Accessibility Strategy for the maintained schools they are responsible for, setting out how the schools will improve access to education for children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
The draft strategy outlines how the council will support inclusive practice across all settings, improve physical access to school environments, and enhance the delivery of information to pupils with SEND.
Councillor Jacqui Coogan, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “Further improving access to education for children and young people with SEND is a key priority for us. We want to hear directly from families, professionals, and the young people themselves to make sure this strategy is practical, inclusive, and truly reflects the aspirations of our community.
"Feedback from the consultation will be used to strengthen the strategy, and I would encourage everyone with an interest in SEND education to get involved and help shape a more accessible future for Wolverhampton’s schools.”
