The improvements are part of the transformative Bilston Health and Regeneration Programme (HaRP), supported by Government funding.
HaRP aims to bring together health, leisure and community facilities in Bilston town centre, improving public spaces and encouraging more sustainable active travel.
City of Wolverhampton Council is proposing to update and enhance the pathway, the fencing and borders between the junction at Bert Turner Boulevard, past the outdoor and indoor market, to the bus and tram station.
The design will widen the current pathway so that pedestrians and cyclists can use it together comfortably. Upgrading the surface of the pathway will make it easier for people with pushchairs and wheelchairs to use.
In addition, new trees and shrubs will be planted, fences painted and hedges trimmed. The improvements will make the pathway more pleasant and safe to use.
The pathway acts a major pedestrian thoroughfare that connects the High Street to the outdoor and indoor market and the bus and tram station. It is also used by many people visiting Morrisons supermarket, WV Active Bilston - Bert Williams leisure centre and Bilston Urban Village.
Councillor Stephen Simkins, City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, said: “The pathway improvements are part of the transformation Bilston is undergoing ensuring the High Street, markets, bus station and urban garden are connected in addition to accessing the planned health and wellbeing facility, and leisure centre. They will help encourage active travel making the pathway safe, easy and desirable to use.
“The feedback we gather through the online survey will be invaluable in developing plans for the pathway improvements.
“This scheme builds further on the substantial investment made in Bilston in recent years – better connecting the town for everyone.”
The public consultation invites people to look at the plans and the artist’s impressions of three key areas of the pathway and take a brief online survey.
