The Independent Travel Training programme, provided by City of Wolverhampton Council, offers personalised one-to-one support tailored to each person’s needs.

Training can cover everything from journey planning and personal safety to using public transport and dealing with unexpected situations while travelling.

Alongside working with individuals, the council's Independent Travel Training Co-ordinator, Alistair Boddie, works closely with SEND schools to design and deliver bespoke programmes for groups of pupils.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: "This free training is a wonderful thing that really opens the world up to young people and gives reassurance to parents and carers.

"Not only does it help teach our young people how to get from A to B safely, but it also provides them with invaluable life skills helping to create more inclusive communities where they can grow up to lead independent lives and fulfil their potential."

Independent Travel Training Co-ordinator, Alistair Boddie, said: "Every young person is different, which is why our training is tailored to the individual's needs and goals.

"Whether it is learning how to use public transport, planning journeys or building confidence when travelling independently, our aim is to equip young people with skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.

"It is incredibly rewarding to see young people grow in confidence and achieve greater independence, opening up new opportunities for education, employment and social activities."

The programme is free to eligible Wolverhampton residents and forms part of the council's commitment to supporting independence and inclusion for young people with SEND.
