Over the last year the project, run in partnership with the African Caribbean Community Initiative (ACCI) has provided 621 beds, 674 mattresses, 246 bedding sets, and 24 cots, to ensure families, particularly those with young children, had access to essential sleeping arrangements.
Despite the help given since its launch in 2023, there is still real need in the city with the project receiving on average 25 referrals a week and high demand still for cots and toddler beds in particular.
Figures show those in need are distributed across Wolverhampton with the highest volumes in St. Peter’s (177 referrals), Heath Town (176), and Bushbury South & Low Hill (122). The lowest were Penn (15) and Tettenhall Regis (18).
The council has allocated £130,000 to date from the Government’s Household Support Fund and the project is working hard to become self-sufficient.
It works closely with local businesses and voluntary organisations and is also part of the council’s City Homemakers initiative, so will benefit from items donated by residents to the Too Good to Chuck scheme, operated at Shaw Road Household Waste and Recycling.
But due to still high need in the city, donations are still needed to help people in the short-term. In particular toddler beds, double and triple bunk beds and single beds for children are needed.
Leader of the council, Councillor Stephen Simkins has championed the scheme from the outset.
‘As a council we are determined to be there to support our residents when they need us most.
‘Everyone should be able to have their own bed to sleep in at night and it’s sad there is a need for a project like this, but I’m glad we are able to help. night.
‘We are still in tough times, but we will continue to support the great work carried out by this project throughout the city.
‘Too Good to Chuck that we launched earlier in the year will help, we’re receiving a high volume of good quality donations, but I’d implore anyone who has beds or cots they don’t need to contact the Good Night Project.
‘None of us want to think of anyone having to sleep on the floor at night particularly children. We all deserve a good night’s sleep as a basic in life, so we’re in a fit state to learn, work and live successful, healthy lives, so please try and help if you can.’
Project co-ordinator, Phil Dixon from ACCI said: ‘Demand has remained high for the last 12 months and we’ve seen a particular increase in demand for children’s beds and bedding.
‘This has included bunk beds, which has enabled a significant number of children to move from having to share a bed with their siblings to having a bed of their own.
‘At the start of the Good Night Project we had a fantastic donation of more than a hundred new cots from Kinder Valley, but our stocks have now nearly run out so any donations to help us replenish those stocks would be gratefully received.’
Alicia Spence, Chief Executive Officer at ACCI said: ‘ACCI has been a proud partner with the city council in helping deliver what is a very important service to some of the most vulnerable citizens of Wolverhampton.
‘It is a basic human right to have somewhere warm, safe and comfortable to sleep and we at ACCI would like to thank all of those individuals, families and organisations which have supported us as the project moves into its third year.’
