West Midlands Police reported in May 2026 that overall crime in Wolverhampton fell by more than 7% over the twelve months to March 2026, with reported residential burglary down 31%. For a region that has spent years working to change outside perceptions, that is a figure worth repeating.

It does not, however, mean that every business here faces the same risk, or that the same security measures suit them all.

A diverse economy creates diverse exposure

The Black Country's strength is its breadth. Advanced manufacturing and aerospace supply chains sit alongside precision engineering, logistics, construction, professional services, education and a growing clean-growth sector — from i54 South Staffordshire to the University of Wolverhampton Science Park and the industrial estates of Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell.

Those businesses do not share a risk profile. A distribution operation loses value at the gate and on the road. A manufacturing site carries high-value plant and tooling. A construction site's exposure changes every few weeks as the programme moves. Security written for one of them tends to fit the others badly.

Regeneration moves risk around

Active regeneration across the region is a good sign, but it shifts where the exposure sits. Sites in build, part-occupied buildings and units between tenants all fall outside the assumptions most security arrangements were written under. Vacant and transitional property is the clearest case: an empty unit is often the least protected asset an owner holds, at the point when responsibility for it sits with the landlord rather than a tenant.

Five things worth checking

• When was your arrangement last reviewed against what the site actually does now?
• Does the cover match the hours the site is genuinely empty, rather than office hours?
• If a building is empty or between tenants, who is inspecting it — and is that recorded?
• Would your patrol pattern be predictable to someone watching it for a week?
• Do you know who attends if an alarm activates at three in the morning?

None of those require more spend. Most are questions about whether an arrangement still matches the site.

Falling crime figures are welcome, and they should be read as what they are: a regional average. Security that is proportionate, preventative and reviewed regularly is what turns that average into something an individual business can rely on.
