The works have delivered warmer, greener and more energy efficient homes for council tenants living in ageing non-traditionally built housing stock in Bushbury, New Park Village, Heath Town, Merry Hill, Ettingshall, Wednesfield, Bilston, Bradley, and Parkfields.

The properties have been made more energy efficient through a series of measures, including installation of external wall insulation, cavity wall insultation, new double glazing, replacement of external doors, increased loft insulation, improved ventilation, and re-roofing – all helping tenants reduce the amount of energy they use and cut down carbon emissions.

The council secured over £5millon from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (Wave 2.2) to contribute towards the delivery of the scheme.

Mandy Pitt of Hatherton Gardens, Bushbury, had retrofit works carried out on her council home.

She said: “Overall we’re really happy with the outcome. Our home is definitely warmer in the winter because the winter before was freezing.

“Our energy bills are a lot better - we’re not putting as much on the gas to warm the house up. The heat remains in the property a lot better than it did beforehand, so we’re really pleased with that.”

The overall works programme has been managed on behalf of the council by Wolverhampton Homes and followed a consultation process with the residents.

Councillor Steve Evans, City of Wolverhampton Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Housing, said: “These retrofit works have improved the homes of our tenants, making them warmer and healthier, and saving them money.

“With the current high cost of energy, it is especially important we improve the energy efficiency of any poorly performing council-owned housing and that is why the council committed to this investment programme.

“Our priority is to make the best use of our assets and ensure high standards across all areas of council housing, and this demonstrates the council’s commitment to ensuring every resident has a safe and affordable home.”
