Residents in Wolverhampton struggling with the cost of living can get digitally connected for less this Black Friday (Nov 28) with special deals and discounts on offer.
But those on certain benefits are being reminded they could save even more through social tariffs.
City of Wolverhampton Council is shining a light on this and other support available all year round to help bridge the digital divide and get people connected across Wolverhampton.
Social tariffs are discounted broadband or mobile plans, offered by most major providers, for those on lower incomes. They can range from £10 to £25 per month and while take-up is improving, it remains low as a proportion of eligible households (10%) according to Ofcom.
City of Wolverhampton Council is also encouraging people to check if they can apply for social tariffs and to make use of the National Databank, which gives out free SIM cards through participating regional organisations for those struggling to afford mobile data.
This initiative, supported by major networks and local organisations, provides free SIM cards loaded with data, calls, and texts to those in need.
Through the council’s network of 88 trusted partners, people in Wolverhampton also have access to loaned or gifted devices and digital skills training.
Councillor Jeszemma Howl, Cabinet Member for Governance and Digital at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “We are determined to see 100% of our residents able to access digital services so they are able to connect to vital services and information, access opportunities such as jobs and training and interact with friends and family.
“Black Friday is a great time to take advantage of special offers, but we want people to know our support, together with our trusted partner network, goes beyond one day, we’re here to help all year round.”
Eligibility varies by supplier, so it is recommended you get in touch with your current provider, or check out OFCOM’s resources to see whether you qualify and what tariffs are available.
