The special guest for the event was Noel Fitzpatrick, famously known as the Supervet, who brought his characteristic charm and passion for reading to the occasion.
The transformation of a half-empty bookshelf in a storage classroom into a magical new library brimming with hundreds of donated books has been an inspiring project for the school and its community. The initiative has united local businesses, organisations, and families to create a welcoming space where children and parents alike can explore the joys of reading—often for the very first time.
Cathy Harris, a school governor and the driving force behind this initiative, received glowing praise for her efforts. Headteacher Sandra Pennington described Ms Harris as “a formidable force,” crediting her determination and vision for the success of the project.
During the ceremony, Noel Fitzpatrick shared his thoughts on the importance of reading and community spirit. “It is a joy to help open this beautiful new library for the children of Birchen Coppice Primary Academy,” he said. “Stories have the power to change lives, and it’s wonderful to see a school placing reading at the very heart of its community.”
The library’s opening has already sparked new opportunities for the school, including the launch of a Parent Book Club to foster a love of reading among both children and their families. The library aims to be a hub of creativity and learning for the local community.
Among the key guests celebrating the opening were Ian Smith, High Sheriff of Worcestershire; Doug Hine, Mayor of Kidderminster; Nathan Desmond, Wyre District Councillor; Roland Roberts, Chair of Governors; and Cathy Harris, Project Lead and School Governor. Representatives from Simon & Schuster, Amanda Harris (Founder of Maven Literary Management), the National Literacy Trust, Webbs Garden Centres, Patrick Etherden, Nicki Fry (Head of Tormead Prep School), and other local supporters who contributed to the library’s creation were also in attendance.
