The historic service saw the Mayor, councillors and civic dignitaries processed from the Civic Centre to St Peter's Church, where they gathered to affirm their duty to the city and the communities they represent.

This year's service reflected Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Paul Singh's theme for the year, "Through Sport We Grow", while also introducing several new elements designed to make the occasion more accessible, inclusive and relevant to a wider audience.

Among those attending were representatives from the Mayor's chosen charities for the year, including Wolverhampton Boxing Club, Wolverhampton Judo Club, Friends of Di's Kitchen and Inspire You. Representatives from all 4 organisations addressed the congregation, sharing details of their work and the positive impact they have within local communities.

One of the most significant changes to this year's event was the decision to move the service from its traditional Sunday morning slot to a weekday evening. Organisers hoped the change would enable more people to attend and take part in this important civic occasion.

Music played a prominent role throughout the evening. Alongside the traditional contributions from the St Peter's Choir, the United Churches Gospel Choir performed during the service for the first time, bringing a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere to the proceedings with two specially selected songs.

Another new addition saw 16 year old City Youth Councillor Shyarna Reid take centre stage to read the commitment made by the Mayor and councillors. Her participation highlighted the important role young people play in civic life and the future of the city.

The service also featured contributions from members of different faith communities. Through the support of Interfaith Wolverhampton, representatives from a range of faith traditions offered prayers from their own beliefs, reflecting the city's diversity.

Speaking after the service, Mayor Councillor Singh said: "The Civic Service is a traditional service where the new Mayor and councillors gather in church to affirm their duty to the city and its residents, however we wanted to introduce some new elements this year to keep it fresh and relevant to as many people as possible.

"Alongside the amazing St Peter’s Choir, the energy of the United Churches Gospel Choir was absolutely brilliant and really brought a new dimension to things, and I also want to thank Shyarna for standing up in church and reading out the vows of commitment to myself and then all of the other councillors.

"The team at St Peter's Church, including the new rector Father Jeremy Dussek, were really enthusiastic about some of the changes we wanted to make and worked very closely with the Mayoral team to deliver a service which was energised and inclusive. I'd like to thank all those who attended this important service."
