Mobile Enforcement Vehicles (MEV) are equipped with technology that automatically captures evidence of those ignoring school keep clear zones – with fines sent to drivers.
The council camera cars patrol during the school run alongside foot patrol enforcement officers, helping to tackle those flouting traffic restrictions.
The first upgraded MEV launched in 2025 with a second vehicle added at the start of this year – and they are already responsible for more than 1,200 PCNs being issued.
Income from all PCNs can only be used for specified transport-related purposes.
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for City Transport, said: “There can be no compromise when it comes to children's safety and our enforcement vehicles and foot patrols are helping us tackle motorists who continue to flout waiting restrictions around schools.
“We strongly encourage people to be more considerate when dropping off or collecting children from school and avoid creating a danger for others crossing nearby.”
The enforcement work supports Safer Routes to School measures implemented by the council across the city including new zebra crossings, speed bumps, improved signage and school keep clear zones.
The MEVs capture video footage of potential parking violations, which is reviewed by an independent officer. If a contravention is confirmed, a PCN, along with photographic evidence, will be issued by post within 28 days.
Incidents involving serious threats or aggressive behaviour towards enforcement officers are treated seriously and will be formally reported.
