It will create space for an additional 79 Year 7 places from 2027, and 395 permanent places across Years 7 to 11 by September 2031.
The expansion, approved by Cabinet yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 8 July, 2026) will help meet the growing demand for secondary school places in the south east of the city, and Colton Hills has already been admitting significantly more pupils through temporary arrangements and 'bulge' classes.
Councillor Jacqui Coogan, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "Ensuring that every child in Wolverhampton has access to a local, high quality school place is a key priority for the council.
"Colton Hills is one of the best places we can do this in the city, with demand for places locally already high – indeed the school has already increased its Year 7 intake this year. These plans will create nearly 400 additional places across Years 7 to 11 by 2031."
Julie Hunter, Headteacher of Colton Hills Community School, added: "We are grateful for the support shown by the council and all those involved in bringing these plans to fruition.
“The expansion and refurbishment will create a modern learning environment that reflects the high aspirations we have for every child. We are proud of our history, but this project is firmly focused on the future, ensuring that Colton Hills continues to provide outstanding opportunities for young people for many years to come."
The permanent expansion will be a standalone 2 storey building at the heart of the school, which will include 6 classrooms and art studios. In addition, the school hall will be extended to accommodate the increase in pupil numbers.
This will complement works that are currently taking place to extend and refurbish the existing fitness suite and changing room facilities.
