The one-day event aims to strengthen multi-agency understanding of drowning, enhance decision-making at the scene of incidents and ultimately reduce preventable deaths across the region and beyond.
Drowning remains a significant public safety concern in the UK. In 2024, there were 193 accidental water-related fatalities, including 136 in England. Inland waterways accounted for 61 per cent of these incidents, with 84 per cent of those who died being male.
The conference will feature a programme of specialist sessions covering drowning physiology, prevention initiatives, real-life case reviews from across the Midlands and the latest clinical updates relevant to pre-hospital responders.
It is designed for a wide range of professionals, including pre-hospital clinicians, HEMS teams, fire and rescue personnel, search and rescue organisations, military medical teams and event medical providers.
Liam Webb, critical care paramedic at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “These statistics highlight just how urgent the issue of drowning remains.
“Every life lost is a tragedy, yet many of these incidents are preventable. By bringing together clinicians, emergency responders and water safety professionals, this conference strengthens our shared ability to respond effectively and reduce preventable harm.
“We are committed to supporting our communities through education, collaboration, and continuous improvement in clinical care.”
The event will take place at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s airbase in Shifnal, Shropshire and is open to professionals involved in water-related emergency response.
