I know I said the Italian Alps were my dream getaway, but then I dreamt the dream that is Bruges….but before I knew it; I was transported to my favourite romantic getaway ever….Vienna!
Sachertorte and champagne, opera and the Danube where oh where to begin….
Perhaps with one of the best inventions ever… the Sachertorte! Was there ever a cake made quite like the one at Café Sacher? This I doubt! Rich Sachertorte chocolate cake with apricot jam and dreamy chocolate topping, all accompanied by an afternoon pianist, a luxurious start to an amorous lady’s heart this Valentines.
Nothing says romance more than a visit to the Butterfly House in Burggarten Park. The Art nouveau structure houses hundreds of tropical butterflies, a waterfall and several bridges. Oh the joy!
Ooh, maybe we’ll go all out, and visit the opera at the Staatsoper, Vienna State Opera; it has world class opera and ballet with the renowned Vienna Philharmonic in the pit. What an opulent and awe inspiring experience on this most romantic of all days.
No trip to Vienna would be complete without a visit to Esterhazykeller Palace. This is the perfect place for intimate conversations over a shared glass or two of Gruner Veltliner wine. Then off to a horse-drawn Fiaker carriage, most romantic by night. Ask your fiaker coach for a "porcelain ride", which is a calm and steady ride…be still my beating heart!
Finally, over to see the most amazing Lippizaner Stallions trotting gracefully at the Spanish Riding School at the Hofburg….Vienna, forever elegant, magnificent and the most romantic city in the world. I’m coming over all cultural…. Where is this dream going to take me next…..watch this space.
