Weymouth College celebrates completion of the new Dorset Construction and Training Centre in Poundbury, Dorchester.
The multi-million pound project is the latest in a series of significant investments at the College to provide top-class facilities in the heart of the local community. The new Dorset Construction and Training Centre has been built to accommodate the increased demand for construction trade skills and boast high quality construction and stonemasonry workshops.
Emma Cogan, Director of Learning - Adult and Community Skills at Weymouth College said: "We are very excited about the possibilities the Dorset Construction and Training Centre represents. The purpose built workshops are equipped with the latest tools, equipment and technology and we are developing a range of new courses such as Thatching and Dry Stone Walling to meet demands of industry as well as short specialist courses for mature students and professionals wishing to upgrade their skills including a range of DIY courses such as Plumbing, Electrical, Plastering, Brickwork and Decorative Techniques. The first Open Day in February at the Centre was a great success and gave us an opportunity to show off the fantastic facilities to guests and visitors including a chance to try out construction related activities. Our recent Construction Conference for business and industry was also well attended and we envisage staging business conferences at regular intervals at the Centre."
The new centre will also host the practical elements of a state-of-the-art Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction (to be validated by the University of Plymouth). Dr Ross Kay, Director of Higher Education said: "This course will allow current builders to prepare for the future requirements of only building truly sustainable homes. Being part of Poundbury means people will be able to take part in new and innovative projects and learn about the latest developments in the construction industry.
The centre will provide a range of resources and learning opportunities for the public and serve as a hub for wider sustainability activities and provide education and information at all levels."
