thebestof Weymouth and Portland's chosen charity for 2009 - The MV Freedom

We are delighted to announce that The MV Freedom is our charity for 2009. The MV Freedom is a boat for the disabled, and certified having full wheelchair access approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Health and Safety Executive.

A trip on Freedom gives a unique service for the benefit and enjoyment of people who may have a disability or learning difficulty, or who may be elderly but still young at heart! Giving them the chance to experience our beautiful Jurrassic coast from a seaward perspective. Day centres, and care homes from all over Dorset and surrounding counties benefit from the service as do visiting disabled groups holidaying in the U.K who get to enjoy an unrivalled view of the Dorset coast. MV Freedom also offers disabled anglers the opportunity to take fishing trips.

MV Freedom is run on a totally voluntary basis. The skippers, crew and members of Friends of the MV Freedom are all volunteers giving their time freely. All funds raised go only towards the vessel s running and maintenance costs.

The costs of running such a vessel are £12,000 + per year and include: insurance, fuel, lifesaving equipment, fees, licenses, and general maintenance incurred over the season. Funds are raised by organising events such as dances, raffles, coffee mornings and involvement in local events. Current Friends of the MV Freedom have also re-introduced collection pots which are distributed locally. These have proven to be a good way of promoting awareness of Freedom as well as providing a steady trickle of income. Donations from private individuals and local organisations are also received.

Help with fundraising events and collection pots is always needed and appreciated and if you have a little spare time or any ideas and would like to help with crewing or fundraising please phone Geoff on 01305 761825.

For bookings please phone Jennie on 07974 266867 or skipper Mike Winter on 07836 663716
