Wills, LPAs and Protecting Your Family – Let’s Make the Conversation a Little Easier

There are some jobs in life that are remarkably easy to put off.

Sorting out the garage. Clearing that cupboard. Finally organising the photographs on your phone.

And then there are the rather more important things we tend to put off – like making a Will or thinking about a Lasting Power of Attorney.

For many of us, it isn't because we don't think they're important. It's simply that we don't know where to start, we're worried it will all be terribly complicated, or we'd rather not think about a time when we might actually need them.

That's exactly why Toucan Law is inviting local people to join them for a relaxed and completely free Toucan Talk at Clarence Park Bowls Club in Weston-super-Mare on Monday 2nd November at 2.00pm.

The idea is simple: a friendly conversation about making plans for what matters most, without drowning everyone in legal jargon.

What is a Will and why should we have one?

At its simplest, a Will records what you want to happen to your estate after you die.

For many people, that means deciding who should inherit their money, property and possessions and appointing the people they trust to deal with their affairs.

But making a Will isn't necessarily just about who gets what.

It is an opportunity to think about the people who matter to you and make your wishes clear, rather than leaving those decisions entirely to the rules that apply when somebody dies without a valid Will.

And although we often associate Wills with later life, they're relevant at many different stages of adulthood – particularly when circumstances change.

Buying a home, getting married, having children, welcoming grandchildren, separating, starting a business or simply deciding that it's finally time to get your affairs in order can all prompt people to think about their future plans.

And what exactly is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Lasting Powers of Attorney – usually shortened to LPAs – are another area where people often know the phrase without necessarily understanding what it means.

An LPA allows you to appoint someone you trust to make certain decisions on your behalf, subject to the type of LPA and the circumstances in which it can be used.

The important distinction is that LPAs are about planning for decisions that may need to be made during your lifetime.

That makes them an important part of the wider conversation about planning ahead and ensuring that the right arrangements are in place should you ever need them.

“I’ll sort it out one day…”

That's probably one of the most common approaches to future planning!

The difficulty is that none of us has a crystal ball. Putting sensible arrangements in place while you have plenty of time to consider what you want can provide valuable peace of mind.

And getting started doesn't have to mean immediately sitting down for a lengthy legal appointment.

Sometimes the first step is simply understanding what your options are.

That's the thinking behind Toucan Law's 30-minute Toucan Talk.

A cuppa, some cake and a chance to ask questions

This isn't intended to be a stuffy legal seminar.

Toucan Law will give a friendly, jargon-free presentation covering Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and protecting your family, followed by the opportunity to ask questions informally.

And because important conversations are often easier over a cup of tea, everyone attending will also be treated to a complimentary light afternoon tea, with sandwiches, cake, tea and coffee provided by Toucan Law.

Best of all, the whole event is completely free to attend.
