Garden centre helps
win national training award
STAFF at a Somerset garden centre are celebrating this week (November 15, 2010) after hearing they have assisted in scooping a national top trade award.
Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll, which is part of The Garden Centre Group, helped The Group win a ‘Commitment to Training and Education’ award thanks to the training it offers its employees.
Peter Burks, General Manager said: “We are delighted to have helped The Group win the Commitment to Training and Education award, which was presented at a special Garden Retail Awards ceremony in London recently.”
Prior to autumn 2009, the garden centre only undertook statutory training such as forklift, first aid, food hygiene and had a limited number of workshop-based horticultural and non-industry specific National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).
Sanders Garden World now offers an innovative E-Learning program. The initiative, thought to be the first of its kind in the horticultural industry, was launched to enable all team members to use technology to receive exactly the same training wherever they are based in the country at any time of day to suit them.
Peter added: “Our E-Learning program uses the power of technology to overcome the limitations of time, distance and resources.
Peter continued: “E-Learning is accessible at Sanders Garden World or from any other internet connected computer, enabling all our staff to be able to access the company training program whether at work or at home.”The 2010 Garden Retail Awards, which are presented by the horticulture industry’s leading business and professional magazine, Garden Retail celebrate the best of the gardening industry.
