HAD: enabling older and disabled people to lead an independent life

HAD is an independent charity offering innovative, affordable and practical services for disabled people throughout Hertfordshire and beyond.

Our key services are:

Welwyn Garden City Equipment Centre:  Managed by Cherie West, and her team of trusted assessors which includes three Occupational Therapists, the centre has a huge number of mobility products on display so customers can try, buy or browse. From walking sticks to wheelchairs, mobility scooters to rise/recline chairs and bathing equipment.

A number of bariatric products have recently been added to the range, these include Zimmer frames, walking sticks, chairs, shower and bathing stools and a shower komode. We also provide bariatric wheelchairs for hire. The Occupational Therapists also run free weekly specialist seating clinics to ensure customers get the appropriate and most comfortable chair for their own specific needs.

The Hillingdon Equipment and Advice Centre is managed by Lorraine McMahon and her assistants Mina Previdi and Lule Kidane. The centre will also benefit from the input of HAD's team of Occupational Therapists.

Driving Centre: Lessons and assessments in a fleet of dual controlled, adapted and non - adapted vehicles.

24 hour Accessible Transport: The only service of its kind in the country. Wheelchair accessible vehicles taking people to work, medical appointments, shopping, leisure and holiday trips, wherever and whenever they want. We also have a fleet of accessible vehicles for hire.

Information and advice: Last year HAD received around 25,000 telephone calls seeking information and advice. We have recently started providing professional benefits advice every Wednesday. Welfare advice is also available.

Fundraising

Fundraising has never been so important. We currently hold and take part in a number of local community events including an Easter egg hunt and raffle, golf days and music events.

In the summer we were one of the chosen charities at Harpenden's Classics on the Common vintage car festival.

Want to help?

If you would like to get involved, we are always looking for volunteers to help us at The Woodside Centre in Welwyn Garden City, maybe in the equipment centre or in our front office. Our fundraising team would love to hear from you if you want to join the team or put on an event for us. Alternatively you could pop in and see us and see for yourself some of the recent changes we've made.
