Parkinson’s UK

Supporting those with Parkinson’s.  Help us find a cure.

1 in every 500 people in the UK has Parkinson’s.

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition.  It is caused by a lack of a chemical, dopamine, in the brain as a result of some nerve cells having died.  Why this happens is not understood.  And there is currently no cure.

The loss of nerve cells in the brain causes tremors, rigidity and slowness of movement.  It can also lead to tiredness, pain, depression and constipation.  Over time, the symptoms become more acute and full-time care is needed to help with daily routines such as washing and dressing. It can make life very difficult for the sufferer and their family.

Symptoms can be controlled using a combination of drugstherapies and possibly surgery.

Parkinson’s UK fund research into finding better treatments and ways to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson's. We are also leading the work in the search for a cure.

If you have Parkinson's, or you know someone who has, we are here to answer your questions.  Please refer to our website or call our confidential helpline on 0808 800 0303.

The Welwyn and Hatfield branch of Parkinson’s UK offers information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson's, their families and carers and organises regular events and social activities.
