A very big welcome to

The Best of Pontypool.

This is your new village pages where you can update and find out all you need to know about your local area.

Pontypool (welsh) Pont-y-Pwl

Situated on the Afon Lwyd river.

Pontypool grew principally from the manufacture of iron.

During the Elizabethan period Richard Hanbury bought land locally and in 1588 constructed an ironworks.

The Hanburys pioneered the production of iron, Pontypool japan-ware with its decorated, laqured style.

The Hanbury family lived in what was to become Poontypool Park and the town grew around this.

The former Pontypool Park house is now St Albans R.C.High school. The park is also home to the leasure centre with a 25 metre swimming pool, theres the oldest and longest artificial ski slope built in 1974 and at 230 m long is used for leasure and by the Welsh Ski Squas for training. Theres a prize winning Brass band and of course we have the Rugby, No one can forget the legendary “Pontypool Front Row” in the 1970’s immortalised by Max Boyce.
